don't try to compare this to the gamecube days. first of all. they competed against  the highest selling (till 2012) consol, the ps2. they had a new rivale, the xbox. the console design and controller design was also not very appealing to many people. their games of their franchises were all new tries (sunshine, starfox adventures, metroid prime, wind waker, double dash, luigi's mansion, eternal darkness, etc.). these games were all good but many didnt like it cause they expected something different after the n64 era.

Surely it is worse right now? I mean they are doing pretty badly with no competition at all, won't it be more difficult when the other consoles come out?

they do have competition tho, PS3/360 have huge libraries of games and cost $200-300 while Wii U had a terrible post launch drought and is $300-350 (nintendo has never been more expensive than the comp). By the end of the year Wii U will have a nice lineup of NSMBU, Nintendo Land, Monster Hunter 3, Lego City, ZombiU, Wind Waker, Pikmin 3, Wii Fit U, likely 3D Mario and Mario Kart, plus it might get a price cut and with holiday deals its possible that you can find one for $200 this christmas. The PS4/next Xbox will have just as much trouble, they will likely cost $400+ and the majority of there games will be available on there predeccesors. People seem to forget that close to half of PS360 owners bought there console in 2010 or later, those people likely wont upgrade for a few years.
