While percentage-wise this is a nice boost in sheer number of consoles sold, it's still... well.... lousy.

And this is launch week for Monster Hunter which has a small but very dedicated base and Lego City which will appeal broadly. You'd expect some increase at least from MH. The question is does it sustain or just drop back to the pathetic sales WiiU had before?

I don't see anyone claim software won't sell some hardware. They say Nintendo franchises (Mario, Zelda, etc) can't lift it over GC levels (that is poor sales levels). That's a fair assessment, although you are free to disagree with it and I've seen some valid points against that argument but it remains to be seen. This week's slight bump doesn't do anything to disprove those arguments as WiiU's sales are still poor by any standard you want to measure it with.

What WiiU needs is another Wii Sports/Wii Fit/Brain Age/Nintendogs type hit to bring in more than the Nintendo core. That could happen. It's possible. But currently it seems unlikely as there is nothing announced that has a shot of being a hit of that caliber. Maybe in 2014....
