I had manic depression for 5 years. Don't want to disparage psychologists and counsellors, but they didn't do shit for me back in University and I had to deal with it myself. I'm perfectly fine now. It's all about your state of mind, you have to make an active effort to change how you think, as generally when you're depressed you're just overwhelmed with negative thoughts and you can't stop them no matter how hard you try. It can lead to some scary anxiety attacks.
Whatever you do, don't take those awful drugs they use to placate you. Even if you're suicidal just talk it over with someone you're close to and make sure they aren't themselves a ridiculously negative individual. I feel we just live in stressful times where a lot can be expected of us. When my father tells me of his life back in the 60s, there was no pressure at all. He didn't even bother with University until he hit his 30s and his life still turned out fine.
I can't comment on bipolar though.
