I've got an old 500GB desktop-class LaCie with its own power supply. Works well so far. Seems faster than loading from disc, perhaps not as fast as internal storage.

One annoyance is that transferring games to the HD is all or nothing. I'd like to keep the irreplaceable save data on the console itself (I don't entirely trust this old drive), but I don't seem to have any choice but to transfer it to USB storage along with all the other game data.

What games do you have on your HDD? I'm thinking about downloading Monster Hunter because I'm too lazy to swap discs all the time. But apparently the internal storage is quite slow (and a lot of HDD's are too) so I'm afraid loading times will actually be worse.

Okay, did a little testing of load times for all my games. Time is seconds from when icon is touched to when "Press Start" is displayed on screen, except for Monster Hunter, which I timed to the intro video since you're just a button press from the menu at that point. Here it is:

Title  Time

NFSMWU HD   36
NFSMWU Internal 39
Zombi U HD 34
Zombi U Internal 34
MH3 U Internal 29
Load Savegame 12.5
Load Moga 5.5
MH3 U HD 30.5
Load Savegame 12.5
Load Moga 6
Batman Disc 41.5
Nintendoland Disc 26
BlOps 2 Disc 52
NSMBU Disc 31

So, fastest game is a disc, slowest game is a disc, and my particular hard drive is sometimes faster, sometimes slower than internal flash. Hope that clears things up. :-p

Edit: Sorry about formatting. Looked a lot nicer before I hit the post button, I swear.
