Yes, they attempted them, but the reality is that the console's controls aren't best suited for doing RTS historically  Why do you think RTS doesn't sell well on consoles?  

They aren't best suited yet still worked well with what they had at the time. Pretty sure a Tablet will change that, you could even use the tablet alone, hold down a trigger for the right click. If random people on forums can think something up I'm sure Nintendo and/or Blizzard can. They did for Diablo and now Diablo 3 too.
