I had a YLOD on my PAL launch PS3 but the slim I replaced it with (yes I bought a new one) still works fine.
I did have an Xbox 360 but after the 4th RROD which was outside the warranty I just sold all my software and cut my losses. Luckily by that point the software landscape was undergoing a shift from 360 to PS3 having the must haves and the noticibly inferior PS3 multi platform titles were also starting to no longer be an issue.
I'd certainly say more units of 360 were sold through upgrades. But they'd more be down to hardware revisions than RROD. (Upgrading to Elite, then to HDMI, then to Xbox S or whatever).
Sony's hardware revisions have more lowered in quality IMO making it less inviting to upgrade.
RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.
