The wifi is still on but nothing happens in the background when game is launched. Even if you play online, there will still be NO background functionality happening.
The battery improvement in the newer firmware is most likely because it doesn't need all the extra power in firmware 4.5.0-10. But it still doesn't do anything in the background online, so the battery life ends up being better.
Almost all 3DS games do everyone in the background online, while you have the game active, excluding Kid Icarus & Sonic Racing transformed.
Apperately both games listed, needed more then just the extra 25%, especially Sonic Racing Transformed which still has a shorter battery life then regular 3DS games.
User experience can tell a person a lot.
Unfortunately this means we don't collect any SpotPass Mii's while playing online in these Listed games.

All of this is news to me, haha. Still, it is a gaming machine, so I'll take smoother gameplay over background tasks any day.

LOL, the first 1 hour of playing Sonic Racing Transformed was anything but smooth, and is is with Firmware 4.5.0-10. I had experience the strobe effect for the first time on the 3DS because the frame rate dipped below 48 fps per image, and of course I was playing with the 3D On for there to be any strobe effect, but the frame rate still needs to drop below 48 fps to happen and that's what happen in this game. But after up to 4 to 5 hours of playing the game, unlocking stuff in the world tour, I finally had the game running smooth 24/7 ever since.
The great thing about Zelda & Mario & Street Fighter is that the frame rate stays high with the 3D ON, so there is NEVER any strobe effect, but Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D requires Firmware 1.2 & Super Mario 3D Land requires Firmware 2.2.
