You will need to use a Y USB cable to get enough power which you can buy for 3-5 bucks. If your external HDD is not particularly power efficient (really old) than it may still not be getting enough power via the Wii U to provide you stable experience. Nintendo official recommendations are to use external HDD that are AC powered.
I myself am using Western Digital 2TB Passport drive with Y USB cable and it is working fine. Before that I was using a much older 500GB drive also with Y cable and my Wii U or game would crash too much. Once I upgraded to more power efficient drive, my crashing stopped.
