I don't get this either. I've played lots of games with micro-transaction, some of them competitive. Since I'm a cheap bas---d I haven't spent a single cent yet and have in no way at all felt compromised because of it.

For all the online competitive games I've played, they automatically put you in a group or against another individual based on previous performance. I've ranked all the way up (grinding) only to realize that it's pretty fruitless, because you're always put against others as good as you (who either paid or grinded).

In games like Temple Run, I don't even want to pay for stuff to get a better score, because, I want to see how high a score I can get 'honestly'. Paying would totally cheapen the achievement. Same for online. If I can beat you without a single 'paid' ungrade (all of with are accessible via grinding anyway) it's so much sweeter.

Kinda reminds me of Team Fortress 2.
My brother is a fan of specific servers who allow all players to have twice the health, double the ammunition within a magazine, faster running speed and so on.
But the thing is people can become "premium" members on these servers and have additional abilities such as jumping across the whole map, instant shooting (rocketlauncher, sniper, shotgun etc.).

And yet when I play on these servers with my brother, we're always on the top 2 spots, despite having to deal with these "premium members" (or cheaters).
From my experience, only noobs pay money for things that make them stronger. Because only then they have a chance of beating other players.

Yeah pay2win servers are BS.  Hence why I try and avoid randomly joining random servers.  But that's a server thing and TF2's microtransactions are almost 100% cosmetics.
