Assuming the story is 100% accurate I feel very sorry for that guy, that is a terrible shame. Human rights are still at best a work in progress in China and I saw enough in my five years there to know I would never want to see the inside of a jail cell, let alone a prison. While human rights might be a work in progress, prisoners don't have any.
I lived 5 years in China without incident and loved my time there but the one thing you must ALWAYS keep in the back of your mind when visiting other countries is that you are subject to their laws. You are subject to their laws no matter how unfair or arbitrary they seem and even if you are completely unaware of what the law is. Another thing is China simply does not tolerate other countries interfering in their domestic affairs, so it does not surprise that this man's pleas to his own government fell on deaf ears.
My last point is that this is A real China, not THE real China, many tens and hundreds of thousands of expats live and love their time in China without ever having their rights infringed upon.
