The bigger thing I'd think would be the problem is if they didn't render it in 16:9, and then cut it to 4:3 back then like most movie to fullscreen format.
If they rendered it in 4:3 the only way to fix it without rerendering it would be to cut off the top and bottoms of the cutscenes which isn't ideal in the slightest.
