I don't get this either. I've played lots of games with micro-transaction, some of them competitive. Since I'm a cheap bas---d I haven't spent a single cent yet and have in no way at all felt compromised because of it.

For all the online competitive games I've played, they automatically put you in a group or against another individual based on previous performance. I've ranked all the way up (grinding) only to realize that it's pretty fruitless, because you're always put against others as good as you (who either paid or grinded).

In games like Temple Run, I don't even want to pay for stuff to get a better score, because, I want to see how high a score I can get 'honestly'. Paying would totally cheapen the achievement. Same for online. If I can beat you without a single 'paid' ungrade (all of with are accessible via grinding anyway) it's so much sweeter.
