I´m eager to see how much of a comeback the system will have once Mario Kart & Co are released. The Gamecube had all those games too...but at the same time those games have become more popular than they were in the 6th generation.

What Mummelmann said is an interesting point...it could be the Gamepad/asymetric gameplay idea just won´t resonate with the market ...things like price cuts/better marketing/Mario Kart/WiiSports U/WiiFit U/etc...will come in time (hopefully concerning the marketing part)...if even after all those things we still see a GC/N64 performance, one could say the main problem is the system itself and its design philosophy.

The most likely outcome for the Wii U, from where I'm sitting, is a console with a really spiky sales curve, big Nintendo titles to drive sales fairly high and then massive drops when the storm settles. That's its main problem since it lacks appeal, it will likely never be able so sustain high sales, going off of the momentum of software and price alone, appealing to the fans of game franchises rather than having an enticing product, will probably ensure that it doesn't gain traction outside those circles and we can certainly forget about anything like the Wii's viral success or the lauded hardware and big budget 3rd party efforts that will net the competition a lof of press, both mainstream and tech.

The Wii U has done exactly what I said it would; fallen in between two markets where neither core nor casual gamers are really enticed by the design of the console itself and the services, features and solutions it offers are either unfulfilling (storage, connectivity) or simply available elsewhere and often at a lower price or in better versions (e-shops, online server hosting, streaming, media playback like Blu-reay etc). Getting terribly late ports at almost full price doesn't help either and the Gamepad will end up sabotaging the whole effort in the end.

Now, its highly improbable that the Wii U won't improve, a lot at times but the good numbers will elude it in the long run and to think that a lot of people expect a 3DS-like comeback is simply incredible (this is a widespread belief in here) when the two consoles and situations aren't at all comparable.

Edit; TheLastStarFighter; "Nintendo doesn't have blinders on, they are just being smart." I've never seen anything more wrong in here, Nintendo have been systematically stupid for at least three years with almost everything they've done and they have managed to waste the incredible combined momentum and power that the DS/Wii combo yielded them. This is terrible practice by a company that should know better. They're not nesting on some master plan that was there all along, they've simply fumbled badly for some time and seem inclined to continue doing so for now.

Yeah, I´m not so sure the Wii U will emulate the 3DS comeback..and even then, the 3DS isn´t doing that great in the West.
