The problem will be that the Wiiu will be sandwiched between the two camps. Bare in mind that I'm not from the 'Wiiu is doomed' group of people ... I think it will be fine. Having said that, I think that one of the reasons the Wiiu isn't doing too well at the moment is because a lot of people are waiting to see what the 720 and the PS4 have to offer. So those that CAN afford a little more are likely to invest in the more powerful consoles, while those that are a little strapped for cash could opt for either the Wiiu, PS3 or 360.

The 360 and the PS3 could actually benefit from the Wiiu being on the market because a lot of launch game for the next gen consoles will have a 'this gen' version too. Here lies to problem for the Wiiu though. Will it get the 360/PS3 version of the game or the 720/P34 version of the game? This will be the ultimate test of just how powerful the Wiiu is and frankly, from what I've seen so far on the Wiiu and what I've seen so far on the PS4, the Wiiu is unlikely to get the next gen version. You may see 'some' improvements but not the leap next gen will offer.

This will leave the 720 and the PS4 space to battle it out whilst the Wiiu will have to battle against not only 2 next gen consoles but 2 'cheaper' current gen consoles. Unless the pad becomes a HUGE factor in consumers choice, I just can't see the Wiiu getting anywhere near the numbers that the Wii did.

On that point I have to mention Watch Dogs. The Wii U version is up and running while the PS3/360 versions have not even begun development (as of late-Feb/early-March). I think they might actually take the PC version and see what they can get away with on Wii U rather than going PC->PS4->720->Wii U----->360/PS3. Ubisoft is showing tons of support for the Wii U at this point, so it wouldn't surprise me if that was the norm rather than getting the PS3/360 version.

Honestly, it would be in every developers best interest to do the same seeing as all next gen consoles will be leveraging GPGPU capabilities. Porting up from the PS3/360 is a more time consuming/harder task than porting down from the PC/PS4/720. By the time those types of games come out, the Wii U should have a pretty sizeable install base, so giving them a crappy version wouldn't capitalize on that fact. Shoddy ports are the reason 3rd party games haven't sold well already.

However, I fully expect EA to do dicks about it and give shoddy ports or no ports at all.

I can't see any console getting the numbers that the Wii or PS2 did for a while. The gaming market is shrinking and the economy (around the world) is in the crapper. We'll need to see something pretty damn innovative to bring numbers that high. I'm betting on graphene personally.....that stuff is insane.
