Aye, Shadow Dragon was never going to impress, unless they had made serious efforts to flesh out the characters. 3rd-gen RPGs (even compared to 4th gen, which are still widely beloved today) did not age well in terms of worldbuilding or characterization, and while FE1's story wasn't weak compared to its predecessors (about as intricate as Awakening's, really, with the dark dragon, a scheming wizard, a jealous king, a mad prince, and Tiki), it had next to zero characterization, which is arguably the bigger pull into FE than actual plots.
