USB 2.0 is considerably faster than the disc drive in the Wii U. If the Wii U disc drive is sufficient for large data transfers then USB 2.0 is as well.
The PS3 does large data transfers with a very slow disc drive.
My 360 doesn't have a hard drive, but I install games on 32GB USB memory sticks. Still gives me a boost on load times.
