Truth be told, at this point in time of the system's life, it would probably be selling better if it were just a Wii U with a Pro controller. It would be far cheaper, probably like $199 for the Basic, and it would be easier to understand to most consumers. "Oh, this is the next Nintendo system. HD graphics, controller like a 360. Cool!"
Game development would probably have also not taken as long, as certain games like Pikmin and others make extraordinary use of the GamePad, and had the developers not had to deal with anything but a standard dual-analog controller, some of these games would probably have been out by now. Merely speculation, but I think it holds some water.
Now, long-term, that is where merely being an HD Wii with a 360 controller would be a problem. But right now though, the prohibitive cost that the GamePad is forcing the Wii U to sell at, not to mention most people can't figure out what it is... those are combining to give the Wii U a rough post-launch depression. Lack of 3D Mario and Mario Kart is not helping, either.
