Qualifying minor accomplishments as actual victories is fairly damning evidence that my assertion is correct. Reality remains unchanged. Sony hasn't been able to beat a competitor in the hardware space since the launch of the PS3, and that is what Sony fans genuinely want. They want to be able to say that Sony flat out beat somebody. None of the hardware that Sony has released has bested their rivals. Not a single one. They all lost to a competitors own comparable product. Including motion controlled peripherals that is four straight losses.

Continually lowering the bar isn't going to suddenly create a victory. It just makes the quest for success seem all the more shallow. Can you really take pride in leading the pack in a marathon between mile markers seven through nine if in the end you crawl across the finish line in dead last. Sure there are bragging rights for participating, and actually finishing the race, but those aren't the bragging rights Sony wants. They don't want a moral victory. They want a real prize. Something that is tangible.

To be honest about it I think Sony fans are finally going to get a victory this upcoming generation. Not against Microsoft, but most assuredly against Nintendo. I have said it before Nintendo looks to have made some seriously bad design choices with their console. It is hard to see Sony not taking second place next generation. At least for a few years. I don't want to go too far beyond that. Given how the company routinely fails to turn a profit.

Well thats the problem. This marathon aint over yet. Nobody has crossed the finish line, nobody has give in.

Marathons have both starting lines and finishing lines. We happened to have crossed a finishing line late last year. When Nintendo kicked off a new generation. Effectively ending the previous generation. The fact that Sony and Microsoft are milling around back at the starting line. Doesn't change the fact that the last race is over and a new one began. It is really oxymoronic to imply that you can move the finishing line after someone has already won the race. Now that was the argument against that logic, and here is why that doesn't even matter now.

The entirety of the community has now made the generational shift. Nobody talks in terms of a next generation anymore, because the current generation not only became real to a lot of people with the announcement of the PS4, but the sales of the Wii U have been so attrocious. That many a Sony fan figured that they couldn't win unless they were in. They needed to embrace the current generation to hype the PS4, and to get their licks on Nintendo, but in doing that they validated the existence of the market, and in doing so locked in the previous one.

I can see why they wanted to make the transition. A victory over Nintendo in the current generation seems all but insured, and has the advantage of being just plain indisputable if it comes to pass. Whereas trying to draw out the generation to gain a victory over Microsoft. Amounted to playing against supremely long odds. Sony still had to make up over a million in sales, and the price cutting hatchet was firmly in Microsoft's corner seeing as the 360 is long overdue for one. The idea not being a good one to start with just didn't have any real chance of panning out. Especially with sales dropping year over year. While the PS4, and the 720 are likely to start sapping core sales from the sales of those platforms in the next few months.

Please accept this as your personal invitation to the current generation, and let go of the past generation. It is what it was. I think you will like it here in the current generation, because new things are happening every day. Things that are strange, wonderful, and surprising. Look over there it is a Nintendo fanboy, and he doesn't understand why the Wii U is selling poorly. You desperately want to explain it to him. Come on you know you want to. Let go of the past, and just embrace the present. I bet you can beat him up, and take his lunch money. Come on you know you have wanted to do it for years. Everyone else is doing it. Don't you want to be cool.
