I don't understand Sony's logic in not cutting the price for the 3G model in the West if their going to discontinue it soon. It seems dumb not to. |
I highly doubt they are discontinuing the 3G model, if anything they are getting rid of the Wifi only one. 3G costs a couple bucks or so and I think they had two models originally only to increase profit margins by enticing consumers to pay $300 for a 3G model. The Japan price cut puts both modes at the same price, indicating one of these versions will be on its way out. As said, 3G is cheap for Sony and they might even get some profit from the subscription. Eliminating it will cause bad PR, eliminate developer support for 3G-esque features, cripple GPS location based features. Eliminating Wifi only will increase support for these features, provide more benefits to future Vita buyers, and perhaps encourage some to upgrade in the future. The Wifi only model was a mistake, the Vita should have been 3G standard at $250. I'm sure that would have meant less profit for Sony...but maybe it would have helped sales. Ah, hindsight.
Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(
