I believe Japan's bank kept trying to devalue the yen in the past few years. Anyways I don't see why it went from ~80 per US dollar to almost 100 now. |
Because the conservative (in the small c sense) Bank Of Japan provided a rock of stability for currency investors amidst the Keynesian madness of the last 4.5 years since the Great Financial Crash. With the Euro, Pound, and Dollar tanking, Japan remained constant, which made it more attractive to foreign investors, increasing a deflation problem because you had a strong currency in a depressed economy, whose main lure was simply as an investment/speculation currency, forcing it even further down.
Now Japan's gone neo-Keynesian with Shinzo Abe imposing his will against the BoJ, however, while America is lurching its way through recovery and the EU stabilizes, so the reverse is happening.
The important thing here, as the OP indicated, is that Nintendo beat the general upward trend. Otherwise it would just be a matter of them being on the rising tide.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
