Nintendo Stock Jumps Up 8% as Yen Weakens,US job market improves

Why was the Yen so high for the past few years? I thought Japanese economy wasn't that great either. Perhaps it was better than everyone else? I believe Japan's bank kept trying to devalue the yen in the past few years. Anyways I don't see why it went from ~80 per US dollar to almost 100 now.
