If they cut the price too late the gap will have become too large to overcome (I'm assuming a Vita price drop in the West will follow the one in Japan soonish)

Nintendo products always do better in the holidays, and with Mario Kart, 3D Mario, price cut etc. I can see it beating the Vita by quite the margin.

A Nintendo product hasn't sold this slowly in years so I don't think you can apply the same formula to this as to Wii/3DS/DS. But you're really relying on Nintendo do work some magic then, because if there is no price cut I can guarantee you that Vita will outsell WiiU this year with its price cut. 

The simple truth is that the Vita and the Wii U's respective lives diverged when Nintendo had that Nintendo Direct in January. It isn't apparent yet, but it will be.

That's ignoring that the Wii U is comfortably ahead in total sales launch aligned...
