That is more than half of the number of hardware units sold. If anything NSMBU helped elevate the sales to where the Wii-U is now instead of a less amount figure.

Again proving that Mario is massive appealing and if you dont want to compare NSMBU to NL (which is focused as the bundled game) compare it to the third most sold game on the system currently which is highly acclaimed to be a "Great" game and a NEW IP:

Mario as a IP = Mass Appeal = Potential sales - even though its just a re-hash of a game that came out less than 6 months before it (i.e. NSMB2).
