This would only make sense if they were actually profiting money with the Wii U. As it is right now, Nintendo are selling it at a loss. So the more consoles sold, the more money Nintendo are losing from their pockets. Of course they hope to make the money back from SW and royalties. Plus this can change a few years down the road when the cost of manufacturing lowers. Until then though, they aren't making money.

The 3DS is what keeps Nintendo afloat. Just like how the GameBoy kept Nintendo afloat during the GameCube era. They will continue to support the Wii U until it "takes off."
