Ehhhhh, nah. I know some forums that do that. Still leads to people whoring over points. And those forums aren't even game forums.
Just fucking imagine what will happen when the console wars REALLY heat up later this year.
3 things could happen:
1) Ability to ignore threads. Make them so that they don't bump up PERSONALLY to you.
2) Social feedback/intrinsic motivation. Basically, the community has to regulate itself. Punish people who make bad threads, reward people who make good threads. This is in contrast to extrinsic motivation and "gamification".
3) More subforums for better filtering. E.g. a "games", "polls", or "contest" forum for stuff like "What's your favorite color". And/or a forum where almost anything silly goes, without regards to quality (maybe even let people bump up their post counts in their forum, so that all of that is contained there)
4) Stricter moderation.
