I would say Mega Drive, awesome games that were very different to the SNES. Plus it was backed by Sega.
As for the handhelds, the DS! it has probably the widest selection of games out of any handheld system to ever exist, plus the battery life is insane, it could easily last a few days like a handheld should, i know because my cousins have them.
