Yes the plot in MGR affects the MGS plot, but not too heavily. It's the same as Halo Wars, yea it covers the plot in Halo, but there is no Master Cheif in the game, and you don't need to play this game to understand Halo.

You agree with me and you don't even realize it. MGR will build upon the closure of MGS where future Metal Gear Solids will continue to focus on Snake and the MGS arch. :P

Okay here is an analogy you can understand. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island features Yoshi as a playable character right? However that's still a mario game right? So is Yoshi's Story for N64 and the upcoming Yoshi Yarn still a Mario game, or a Yoshi game? It's related to Mario yes, but it's not Mario it's it's own series.
