Nah, Nintendo doesn't need that.
Mario Kart, and 3D mario this holiday, with one or two surprises and advertising will do it. It will make a comeback with those factors.
If Nintendo doesn't really bring it this holiday, I don't see them making a comeback with the Wii U. I don't remember a system ever suddenly "springing back to life" super late in it's lifecycle.
If it doesn't do well this holiday, then it's ceiling will be around 40 million.
