All I get from the OP is that Nintendo and Sony are lucky to live in a world where the Xbox brand has done so much for gaming. Wah.
As for the rest, Sony and Microsoft have a business model where they change and adapt to new trends and different tastes. Nintendo's model has always been one where they make the device the way they want it to be, which customers can either take or leave. They're very, very slow to go after new core customers or those who are looking for more variety. Intentional or not, that's how they are. They definitely don't appeal to everyone--they seem to be trying to change that with the Wii U, but only kind of. They're niche somewhat by design.
