I believe the movie Real Steel is behind it, with it showing the name in a banner briefly during the movie, or at least partly. It seems like individuals in the videogame journalist arena decided to beat everyone's head over it enough, that people like drones, used it mindlessly, because they assumed that everyone else is calling it. I did a survey on here, and something like over 80% of the respondents (was at least over 70%) didn't believe the next Microsoft console would be called that. But, by convention, it seemed to have stuck. I had proposed that maybe 720 be used as the mythical name for every future unreleased XBox, as a placeholder, until the name was revealed, and people didn't like it.
The Next XBox would make the most sense as a placeholder name.
