^^THIS IS THE BIT that made me think at one point a long time ago that wii u will win next gen. The wii as you correctly said was "everyone's second console".
That was Nintendo's killer move, so to speak. A system apart from the others that offered something different.
To have any chance of winning - or even competing for that matter - the wii u to repeat this feat against it's competitors. In other words become everyone's second console.
The big worry is that many people will choose only one console this gen due to the economy. Time will tell.
I am totally disappointed with it's current sales but there is plenty of time for that to turn around. I like to think many people have the wii u on their radar but is waiting on games and repricing.

I think the biggest fear is the possibility of the Gamepad/asymetric gameplay idea just not resonating with people..if that´s the case, then it´ll show the bad sales are due to more than just the 'no games/price still a bit high' scenario.
