Makes no economic or business sense to redesign the GamePad right now. GamePad's are expensive to make, and Nintendo is barely selling the ones they already have inside the Wii U boxes. They're not even sold seperately, so it would just confuse people if they were looking at three different Wii U SKUs and one of them had a GamePad with it that looked different than the others.
Redesigns occur when manufacturing costs come down and they can produce the product cheaper. It's only been out for four months. It takes a year or two before costs come down to a level where manufacturers start looking at re-designs.
An XL, like the 3DS XL is different, because it's meant to be larger and has a bigger screen, and costs more than the regular DS. But a redesign to make something smaller and lighter requires a significant period of time to pass before it becomes feasible.
