I wasn't being too sarcastic, but extreme or not, his statement refelcts our current obsession with watching drama between people. We love those "reality" tv shows that involve fighting, arguing, cursing, etc. We like that kind of stuff. It's a lot more entertainment than seeing people passively having a debate or just circle jerking (agreeing) I do my best to stay away from that filth but they still got the ratings.

In other words, drama = entertainment.

i think a lot of the entertainment value of these shows is that they show people perceived as "stupid" and watching it and feeling "smarter" and above these perceived "idiots" makes people feel better about themselves.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
