Universal Studios lost because they'd recently won a case proving that Donkey Kong was a public domain and couldn't be owned. They sued Nintendo after they saw how quickly the game was growing, and were punished quite harshly for it by the judge. Nintendo, as thanks to the lawyer who helped them win the case (many seniors in the company were considering bowing out of the American market as soon as a company as large as Universal Studios threatened legal action), bought him a yacht and named one of their future characters after him (Kirby). |
