The name 'Donkey Kong' comes from a misunderstanding. The name was supposed to mean something along the lines of 'silly ape'. Presumably, Kong comes from 'King Kong', which is a big ape, while the word 'donkey' was misunderstood as a word used for something silly.

Nintendo got sued over the name too because of the similarities between King Kong and Donkey Kong. Nintendo won.

They wanted to put Donkey because it showed how stubborn Donkey Kong was (you know, stubborn as an ass), not silly.

At any rate, the name wasn't completely what it was supposed to mean exactly .
