Mario has a mustache because they couldn't draw a believable mouth small enough in Mario's sprites.
Also, the Mario series is just a spin-off.
There's at least one Mario game on every Nintendo console including Virtual Boy. Meanwhile, there's a Donkey Kong and Zelda game on every Nintendo console except Virtual Boy.
Zelda Twilight Princess is little more than a reskinned Wind Waker; it uses the same engine which is evidenced by the cell-shaded explosions which are almost the same in both games.
The NES/Famicom is not Nintendo's first console. Nintendo actually has 1st and 2nd generation entries. They made four types of Pong consoles selling about a million each during the first generation of video games. During the second (Atari 2600 age) they entered the market for handhelds with their Game & Watch line, of which the combined sales greatly exceeded clear console generation winner Atari!
The DS and 3DS after it are heavily based on a certain type of Game & Watch; the Multi Screen.
Nintendo actually was a third party publisher in the past when they released ports of the Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong JR and Mario Bros Arcade games for the Atari 2600, 5200, ColecoVision and Intellivision consoles. Ironically, they one of those who pioneered the idea.
