City Lights

Here is Charlie Chaplin's masterwork, a movie so beautiful, funny, lyrical, and romantic that it dwarfs his other great works. At a time when sound movies were rising in Hollywood, Chaplin chose the silent route with City Lights and it plays to his strengths. The humor, as with all Chaplin movies, is side-splitting. But it's the romanticism in City Lights that makes it so special. There's an enduring hopefulness in the picture that lingers until the final scene, which is one of the best in movie history.
