Ultima was a natural evolution of Rogue-style gameplay, the original turn-based RPG, with tile-based graphics. It also innovated the 3D perspective dungeon of it's primitive predecessor Alkabeth, which later became an RPG genre in its own right. Ultima also had some sci-fi/fantasy crossover themes. UltimaIII introduced party combat in 1983 and ported to the NES many years later. |
Ultima is one of those revolutions that almost no one has heard about.
I just remembered another terrific turn based Western RPG, the most obvious one for me; Betrayal at Krondor! Fantastic game and way ahead of its time.
