I don't even get why we need to bring up the PS3 as a comparison, if we already have the Gamecube. Wii-U's sales patern is almost identical to that of the gamecube and the big software didn't turn the Gamecube into a succes either.

Yes, but there are a few important factors that differentiate WiiU from the Gamecube regarding a possible turnaround:

First, unlike the Cube which released against the Xbox and, more importantly, after the PS2 was already poised for success, the WiiU has a year's head-start on the competition. I will admit, however, that Nintendo has dramatically squandered that lead, but a few million console's sold already is still something.

Second, unlike the Cube, the WiiU has a unique controller that allows it to standout from the competition. Whether you like the Gamepad or not, some people will, and it still helps to distinguish WiiU as its own experience.

Lastly, and most importantly, unlike the Cube, WiiU is coming off of a hugely successful console, meaning that its big games such as Mario Kart, Smash Bros, 3D Mario and Zelda are likely to be more highly anticipated than they were on Gamecube.

Also worth noting when comparing the sales so far to the Gamecube's start is the fact that WiiU is $100/$150 more expensive in a worse economy, no less. And right now, the WiiU's current competition is much more alluring at a more affordable price. Come the launch of the new consoles, WiiU will certainly have price on its side.
