I don't get why so many people can't seem to understand such a basic concept like - games sell platforms, and right now, Wii U simply doesn't have them. This has always been the case, and it will be no different for Wii U. Think about why you've gotten any game console you've bought. I'm willing to bet it was because of a particular game, or games. Consoles are nothing more than machines designed to play games. That is their puropse. So obviously, when more and better games are released, their sales will naturally rise.
Will games like Pikmin, Wonderful 101, Lego City, Monster Hunter boost sales? Probably not very much, but the fact is anyone who wants those games and doesn't own a Wii U will pick one up for them. Its sales are going to go up, hell they really have nowhere to go up at this point. Just a matter of when and how much. I personally don't think they will boost significantly, as I simply don't see the huge hits and evergreen type of titles the Wii had. The closest thing would be Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, Wii Fit, and I guess you can look at Lego City as sort of a wild card. But Nintendo needs NEW franchises to draw the mass market back. They need a new Wii Sports, and by that I don't mean a sequel but a brand new game that returns to the Wii philosophy of simple pick-up-and-play games.

Let me ask you, why do you buy consoles? Is it to use the DVD/Bluy Ray player or to simply gaze at the awesome graphics?
Those consoles you listed would have even sold LESS had they not had their hits games. But the other thing is, most of even the hit games of those consoles were niche and had a limited appeal. In Sega's case, they all but destroyed their image and trust among their fans thanks to terrible marketting and cranking out way too much hardware.
With Nintendo, its games and franchises has a much larger following and appeal. Though they have regressed on this somewhat by returning to some more niche games like Pikmin. But we know that unlike the Gamecube days, they now have the potential to make a game that can become a sales phenomenon. Question is if they actaully will, which is doubtful.
I do agree that Wii U sales certainly aren't going to rise sigifcantly (the offputing gamepad is part of the reason it's doing poorly, and Nintendo obviously can't change that now), but it's pretty foolish to think that their sales are going to stay the way they are once they actually start getting some real games besides NSMB.
