What can Sony and the PS4 do to stop Xbox 8 and Halo 5?

Microsoft and 343 won't rush developing Halo 5 and launch it 1 year after releasing Halo 4. It would cut Halo 4 sales, and since there won't be a larger number of NextBox systems released, Halo 5 sales would be weak.

Instead MS will likely release a Halo Remake, I hear a Halo 1-3 True HD trilogy is planned for launch. A game like that would attract a lot of the core Halo fans and X-Box devoted, and be a good game to convince newcomers to MS platforms and Halo to try out the NextBox. Plus it would help 343 understand how to develop for the Nextbox better and thus make a better Halo 5.

However Halo is huge, if Sony want to nip the Halo bug in the butt, they are basically going to have to look for some great new developers, and market the hell out of a new IP. Microsoft found the guys for Halo when Apple was going to make Halo a Mac exclusive, but later cut funding. Sony found Polyphony Digital when someone made a compeditor to Mario Kart, and wanted to make a SIM racer. Nintendo found Retro Studios when the better developers started to leave Acclaim Entertainment.

Now with so many studios going bankrupt, there is a sea of excellent developers, all Sony needs to do is find a few of the better ones (Maybe the guys who created Modern Warfare, but left Activision), and start something new and fresh. The biggest issue with the PS4 debut was the lack of a new first party IP, and if Sony could make a damn excellent one, and market it as well as they market GT, or as MS markets Halo, and Sony is set.

If Sony can't do this right away, releasing The Last Guardian would be a great start. PS2 had ICO when it launched at look how well the system did.

But MS has it easier, all they need to do is develop a good Perfect Dark, Conker, or Banjo Kazooie Game and that would bring a lot of attention onto MS again. Might let MS compete against Nintendo more aggresively too.
