The reason as far as I understand it is to make Nintendo's own games look and run much better than 3rd parties. And tihs is apparently something they've done since the GC days, or even earlier.

The games don't seem to show this though; Nintendo's games have an edge, but that makes sense as its their hardware and they are familiar with it. Meanwhile, 3rd party games like Rogue Squadron 2 & 3 and Resident Evil 4 surpassed any Nintendo 'Cube title.

Then how do you explain the lack of GOOD 3rd party support on the Wii then? THE best selling console of the 7th gen. Developers really wanted to make games for it, but the HW was so restricted they thought "fuck it" and just released shovelware and poor ass ports.
