This is pure BS. A device is not judged a gimmick or not based on whether it's central or supportive, but intrinsically with regards to its value.
If it brings 0 value but is there to attract attention, it's a gimmick.
If not, it's not a gimmick.
Seriously this is getting very frustrating. A dictionary will serve well in the context of these overwhelming double-standards.
