The PS3's primary expense was the incredibly costly Cell processor and the Blu-ray components, this alone would probably have put them in the red for the first few months.
There is no single component in the PS4 that costs a whole lot (RAM, for instance, is practically free and harddrives cost next to nothing), the GPU and CPU are AMD and pretty straightforward stuff and there's nothing like the Wii U's Gamepad to drive up peripheral costs.
A launch price around the 450-500$ mark seems likely. 450 will be on the edge and likely net a loss but will drive more sales. All in all, with all the social and online features, it should sell pretty well even at 500$ and with some decent launch titles.
