Apparently it was quite a recent change according to Mark Rein on GT but one they were lobbying for for a long time (probably why most of the earlier rumors mentioned 4GB GDDR5) so in fact MS and others may have actually been surprised. I know I was!

Not that it matters in the slightest, if Sony can change out the ram in a short time frame so can MS.

It could also mean that all the rumors spreading out in gamer-forums are based on dev-kits which are quite old.
