Happens to me all the time. But can you really blame them?
The video game industry is not (and probably never will) as big a the movie or music industry and thus all the gaming news we heard every day is pretty much non-existent for anyone who's not interested in the matter.
In my country for example, the only few times when I see a video game related news on the papers is during E3 or really big announcements (like the Wii U's release date and price), and I'm pretty sure most of the viewers just skip this page.
For most people video games are just simple that, they don't know the existence of different platforms so when they see a Mario game they think is a PS platform because they simple don't know, and the word "Playstation" might be the only console they know about video games.
As for a funny story, well I was playing God of War III on a friends house and his aunt asked if that was the "Nintendo" (like I said that's probably the only console manufacturer she's ever heard about).
