It didn't have a big event hyped up for a few weeks.
There are plenty of other examples to point to though. I remember reading gaming magazines in the 90s, before the internet was that relevant, that had a latest roundup of rumours about the next generation in every issue. If anything the fact you had to wait a month between issues helped build up the anticipation even more. E3 seems less exciting these days for similar reasons. The instantaneous nature of everything has dulled the excitement for me somewhat compared to back then. People who've only ever known that might not feel the same way of course...
