The rise of the smaller downloadable game. It's a genre that is responsible for some of the best and most innovative experiences this generation.
PS+ has been really nifty for giving value back to the player rather than just continuing to squeeze.
We've had some excellent FPS releases this generation. Yes, people like to whine about that, but it hasn't even been close to what we've seen in the past, when floods of platformers and beat'em ups choked the market.
Variety. Though RPG representation suffered, pretty much everything else was well represented this generation, which is something I really like to see. The PS2 generation had a fair amount but no as much as we do today.
Owning a game console being accepted. No matter how I feel about CoD or Wii Sports personally, they made adults buying game consoles for themselves common-place. Few people really question it anymore.
It's been a good, diverse generation, in my opinion.
