Yeah Pokemon gives the option to use kana or kanji. A lot of Nintendo games, or Nintendo consoles games, are built kid friendly and have either options to cut kanji or have furigana. The furigana option is superior from a learning perspective since you can see the kanji and its reading at the same time. Dragon Quest VII specifically does have furigana, you might want to consider that. Just a quick example:

I only have a DS, Vita and PS3. After some research, I may get Ni No Kuni. I'd have to check the dictionary every 10 seconds though, lol.
