Call of Duty 4 was great and fairly innovative, the ones after were not. Twilight is the very definition of generic, it takes well used mythology and throws in gimmicks, is poorly written, has a juvenile storyline and cardboard characters, including but not limited to, a main character that is a hollow shell of a being. There are plenty of generic movies that don't have bad acting or directing, most Judd Apatow movies fit under that description. Yes, there is still great music being made and the same goes for movies and games. My point is that the flesh of the market and most of the big sellers are the generic ones, simply because they are generic. The more medicore something is, the broader its appeal, if you start going into depth in one direction, you will alienate many people one way or another, so people opt for the middle, or the lowest common denominator, like I mentioned. This is not my theory, this is how society, and entertainment especially, really works. |
I'll agree with a lot of things you say but if I dont think the game industy or movie industry necessarily works that way. A lot of movies that are popular are the ones that stand out. Sure every once and a while you will have something like twilight which doesnt deserve it's fame but other in recent years like Inception, The Dark Knight, Avatar, etc are the ones that grow popular and for a reason.
Games are the same way. The ones that are popular are usualy the ones that stand out. Yes Call of Duty stopped innovating but it became popular from innovation as well. Even "The Witcher is prety popular and i dont think we would call it generic. How about Uncharted, God of War, Gears of War, Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Assassin's Creed, etc? Are those generic? No, they took great ideas and ran with them. Good games get popular.
Sure some things will get popular for not much reason but most of the time this is not the case. The music industry is about the only industry like this right now and I blame the media and radio stations on that.
